Function  Planning and Analytics (P&A) is responsible for the collection, management, reporting and dissemination of a large range of data relating to school education in the ACT, and performs the role of data custodian for the Directorate. Data made available by P&A is used within schools, the Directorate and the ACT Government, as well as externally by the Australian Government and other national bodies. P&A also provides assistance in the use of data to schools and to other clients in the Directorate. The Branch is responsible for the administration of a number of assessment programs, including NAPLAN and Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS) as well as international assessment programs, including PISA and TIMSS.

P&A undertakes major projects in relation to assessment programs, such as the NAPLAN Online project, as well as working with other agencies and jurisdictions on longitudinal, and other data projects related to education, and oversees the Directorate’s research strategy.

P&A is responsible for undertaking significant evaluations in relation to the education function. To support these evaluations and to meet other requirements, the Branch uses data from a range of sources and carries out a number of surveys of students and school leavers, teachers and school leaders and the families of students and school leavers.

P&A provides the Directorate’s school planning function. The planning function works closely with other ACT Government and non-government agencies to determine the requirement for and the location of both new public schools and new non-government schools, as well as working closely with the Directorate’s Infrastructure and Capital Works Branch on the infrastructure requirements flowing from forecast changes to enrolments.
