Function  The ACT Health Directorate (ACTHD) oversees the Territory’s public health system and provides a strong policy and population health capability based on a foundation of world-leading health and medical research. The Health Directorate develops strategies and sets the direction to ensure that our health and wellbeing services meet community needs and expectations, deliver improved health outcomes, and that the health system is innovative, effective, and sustainable now and into the future.

ACT Health Directorate performs a number of roles including:

• providing strategic leadership, policy advice, and oversight of the public health system to enable clinical excellence and high-quality care
• leading engagement and negotiation with other jurisdictions on health funding agreements and national policy initiatives
• administering the ACT Government’s legislative program on health matters
• delivering a range of health prevention, promotion, and protection services
• engaging with the Directorate’s partners and stakeholders to ensure health outcomes and impacts are considered in whole-of-government policy and health services planning
• supporting and enabling clinical excellence, safe high-quality care, and research across the public health system delivering a range of health prevention, promotion, and protection services
• implementing innovative digital technologies across the public health system and supporting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions that enable person-centred care and making it easier for clinicians to do their work
• conducting public health system planning and evaluation for sustainable services, workforce and infrastructure that supports effective resource allocation, innovation, and safe and high-quality care
• commissioning value-based care that improves health outcomes
• monitoring and evaluating public health system performance to ensure it meets community expectations and performance criteria
• The Office of Mental Health and Wellbeing and Professional Leadership such as the Chief Officer of Nursing and Midwifery, Chief Health Officer, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Allied Health Officer.
